Mirrors of Time: Dates, Cities & Tickets

Mirrors of Time invites you on an enchanting journey through the evolution of orchestral variation, guided by conductor Aziz Shokhakimov and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg in collaboration with the Geister Duo on piano. The program opens with Benjamin Britten’s “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” (Op. 34, 1946), a seminal work originally composed to accompany a British educational film and later celebrated as part of the Oscar‑nominated “Moonrise Kingdom.” Next, Francis Poulenc’s “Concerto for Two Pianos in D‑minor” delivers a Mozart‑inspired homage that layers classical tradition with bold modernity.

The set concludes with Britten’s “Scottish Ballad” for two pianos, a piece steeped in folk heritage, and Edward Elgar’s “Variations Enigma,” which extends the Romantic lineage of orchestral variation into the contemporary age. Written to xx and century, these four compositions, whether rooted in Purcell’s themes, Mozart’s influence, or Romantic romanticism, illustrate the enduring power of variation and tradition, creating a captivating dialogue with the past that resonates today.
