Tyler Perry Lawyer Denies Sexual Assault Claims as $77M Lawsuit Texts Surface

Attorney Alex Spiro is representing Tyler Perry in a $77 million lawsuit filed by actor Mario Rodriguez, who alleges sexual assault and emotional distress. The legal filing, submitted on Christmas Day, is the second such case against Perry in the past year, following a $260 million lawsuit from actor Derek Dixon in June.

Spokespeople for Perry have vehemently denied the accusations. In a statement, Spiro called Rodriguez’s lawsuit a “77 million dollar money grab scam,” echoing similar dismissals of the earlier claims by Dixon.

Conflicting Narratives and Text Messages

The lawsuit contends that Perry subjected Rodriguez to unwanted advances and physical contact during meetings between 2017 and 2019. However, newly revealed text messages present a conflicting timeline, suggesting communication between the two continued as recently as August 2025.

These alleged texts show Rodriguez expressing gratitude to Perry for past support and, in 2025, reaching out about health concerns and financial struggles. This complicates the plaintiff’s assertion that he ceased contact in 2019.

Plaintiff’s Response to Text Message Claims

Mario Rodriguez has responded to the emergence of the texts, arguing that a survivor’s continued polite or vulnerable communication does not disprove abuse. In a statement, Rodriguez explained that power dynamics often compel survivors to maintain a cordial facade and that financial assistance can be part of the complex aftermath of exploitation.

Rodriguez is represented by attorney Jonathan J. Delshad, who is also handling Derek Dixon’s case against Perry. Dixon’s lawsuit is being moved from California to Georgia, while Rodriguez’s was filed in Los Angeles County.

Tyler Perry, the billionaire founder of Tyler Perry Studios, maintains his innocence through his legal team. Both ongoing lawsuits highlight significant power dynamics within the entertainment industry, where career opportunities are often controlled by influential figures.
