Spider-Man: Brand New Day Surges Toward U.S. Box Office Record
Tom Holland's Spider-Man: Brand New Day has climbed to third place on the all-time worldwide box office chart and second on the domestic chart, closing in on the U.S. record held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film posted the largest opening weekend and first-week haul in domestic history and has dominated weekly grosses throughout August.
September 3, 2026
Tom Holland’s latest standalone outing as Spider-Man has rewritten the commercial expectations surrounding the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s 2026 slate. After a stretch of underwhelming performances from earlier MCU releases — including The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Thunderbolts*, and Captain America: Brave New World, all released in 2025 — Brand New Day arrived at the end of July and immediately reminded audiences, exhibitors, and Wall Street analysts why the wall-crawler remains one of the most bankable properties in modern Hollywood.
Now in its second month on release, the film has positioned itself within striking distance of one of the most coveted milestones in American cinema, with industry watchers suggesting the U.S. record could fall within weeks rather than months.
From its first day on marquees, Brand New Day signaled that it was operating on a different commercial tier than its 2025 predecessors. The film posted the largest opening weekend in domestic box office history and laid claim to the biggest first-week haul ever recorded. That combination of front-loaded demand and broad audience appeal established the picture as a generational event rather than a routine franchise installment.
Critics largely embraced the result as well. Collider’s Charlie Ridgley described it as “the best Spidey adventure in 20 years,” a verdict that helped sustain word-of-mouth momentum heading into the all-important late-summer window. Strong reviews typically extend theatrical legs, and Brand New Day has clearly benefited from that pattern, holding remarkable staying power in a season traditionally dominated by horror counter-programming.
In the United States, Brand New Day currently sits in second place on the all-time domestic chart. The film still trails the reigning record-holder, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but the gap has narrowed dramatically in recent weeks. Only about $43 million separates the two films on the U.S. ledger, a margin that could realistically be erased within the next couple of weeks if current weekly holds continue. Should Brand New Day overtake The Force Awakens on the domestic side, it would claim the title of highest-grossing film ever released in North America, a milestone that would underscore the enduring commercial power of the Spider-Man brand and validate the long-running partnership between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios.
On the global stage, Brand New Day has already climbed to third place on the all-time worldwide chart, having leapfrogged Avatar: The Way of Water over the most recent weekend. That feat alone places the film in rarefied company, but the question now is whether it can move any higher on the ladder. The math becomes considerably tougher at the very top. Avatar and its sequel loom as near-$3 billion titans, a level of cumulative gross that few films in history have come close to matching. Industry observers generally consider it unlikely that Brand New Day will challenge Avatar for the global crown, given the latter’s multi-year theatrical run and the structural limits of any single non-tentpole-friendly release window. Even so, locking in a top-three worldwide finish would represent an extraordinary commercial outcome for any superhero film, particularly one that launched under a cloud of lowered expectations.
The path to those historic milestones has been paved by sustained weekly dominance. Throughout August, Brand New Day remained the highest-grossing film in North America on a week-over-week basis, an unusually long run for any modern blockbuster. The only day it surrendered the top daily position was to a single debut day from Insidious: Out of the Further, a horror entry whose audience overlap with Spider-Man is minimal enough that the temporary slip carried no lasting commercial consequences. The pattern stands in stark contrast to the early-2025 MCU releases that preceded it. The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Thunderbolts*, and Captain America: Brave New World each generated respectable but not historic grosses, leading some observers to question whether the franchise had lost its commercial edge. Brand New Day has now answered that question emphatically, restoring Marvel’s reputation as a reliable opening-weekend phenomenon while also demonstrating legs that several recent competitors lacked.
While the box office story continues to unfold, attention is also turning to the future of the franchise itself. The ending of Brand New Day has been widely read as a setup for additional Holland appearances, a reading that the actor himself has done little to discourage. Holland has previously acknowledged that a “whole plan” regarding his replacement has been quietly in place since the production of Spider-Man: No Way Home, but the practical question remains whether he will return for another chapter before passing the mantle.
Marvel Studios President and Producer Kevin Feige addressed that question directly, indicating that Holland is currently taking a well-earned break. According to Feige, “right now, he’s [Holland] going to rest after that global tour. He and Zendaya are going to take a good and restful victory lap, which they very much deserve.” That language points to no immediate plans to begin principal photography on a follow-up film, even as the current release continues to print money at the box office. For now, Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains in theaters, and box office watchers will be monitoring daily grosses to see whether the U.S. record falls in the coming weeks.
