Rob Reiner’s New York Times Omission Explained by Publication Deadline

The absence of acclaimed director Rob Reiner from the New York Times Magazine’s 2025 ‘The Lives They Lived’ memorial section has been attributed to a simple matter of timing. The Times confirmed that the section’s content was locked for publication on December 11, 2025, which preceded Reiner’s death by three days.

The In Memoriam List and Public Confusion

The annual feature, which pays tribute to high-profile individuals who died during the year, included figures such as filmmaker David Lynch, actress Diane Keaton, boxing legend George Foreman, and primatologist Jane Goodall. Reiner’s exclusion sparked speculation among fans, with some theorizing a connection to the tragic circumstances of his death. Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele Reiner, 70, were found dead in their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025, in a homicide ruled as due to “multiple sharp force injuries” with a knife.

Official Statement from The New York Times

Danielle Rhoades Ha, Senior Vice President of Communication for the New York Times, provided clarity on the situation. She explained, “‘The Lives They Live’ is a New York Times Magazine feature. Though the print publication date is Dec. 16, the content was finalized and sent for publication on Dec. 11 — three days before Rob Reiner’s death.” This statement, reported by Deadline, confirms the omission was procedural and not intentional.

Following the deaths, Reiner’s children shared heartfelt statements. Tracy Reiner, his daughter from his marriage to Penny Marshall, expressed being “in shock.” Two of his children with Michele, Jake and Romy, issued a statement calling the event “horrific and devastating,” remembering their parents as “our best friends” and requesting privacy. Their son, Nick Reiner, 32, was taken into police custody on December 16 and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. His arraignment was postponed and is scheduled for January 7, 2026.
