HBO Max Boss Explains Rebranding Reversal, Cites Netflix Influence
Warner Bros. Discovery executive Casey Bloys has addressed the decision to revert the streaming service from Max back to HBO Max, attributing part of the initial branding shift to the influence of Netflix's model. Bloys clarified that the HBO branding signifies quality, while 'Max Originals' will focus on cost-efficient, elevated series designed to provide year-round programming.

Warner Bros. Discovery executive Casey Bloys has publicly explained the reasoning behind reverting the streaming service Max back to its original name, HBO Max. Speaking to reporters, Bloys acknowledged that the initial decision to drop the “HBO” name in 2023 was a “misstep,” partly influenced by the competitive landscape shaped by Netflix.
According to Bloys, Netflix’s position as the first major streaming service turned it into a “utility for consumers.” He explained that the broader industry’s race for volume led many brands to lose their distinct identity. In retrospect, the move away from the prestigious HBO brand, known for decades of quality content, was a mistake. The executive stated that consumer research clearly indicated that subscribers value and specifically want HBO originals, pay-one movies, and the extensive Warner Bros. television library.
With the HBO Max name restored, Bloys also detailed the purpose of “Max Originals.” These series serve a distinct role from traditional HBO productions. They are described as more cost-efficient yet elevated shows with a higher number of episodes, allowing them to return annually. This strategy is designed to attract audiences adjacent to core HBO fans and support a goal of delivering new programming 52 weeks a year.
The recent rebranding ultimately restores the service’s original identity. For subscribers, the content lineup remains unchanged; the movies and shows available are identical to those offered under the Max name. The shift highlights the enduring power of the HBO brand as a mark of quality in a crowded streaming market.
