Darkman Sequel in Development Says Director Sam Raimi

Director Sam Raimi has confirmed that a sequel to his 1990 cult classic Darkman is officially in development. According to the filmmaker, the project is being spearheaded by his production company, Ghost House Pictures, which has a screenplay and directors ready to go, pending the finalization of financing.

Development Status and Details

Speaking in an interview ahead of his new film’s release, Raimi provided an encouraging update on the long-dormant franchise. He stated, “Yes, Ghost House Pictures, the company I work with, is trying to make the sequel right now. We’ve got a screenplay and two great directors, but we’re still having a little difficulty with the financing.” This highlights a common hurdle in film production, even for projects with strong creative foundations.

The Legacy of the Original Darkman

Released in 1990 and starring Liam Neeson, Darkman was Sam Raimi’s original superhero creation, developed after he was unable to secure the rights to The Shadow. The film follows Dr. Peyton Westlake, a scientist who becomes the disfigured vigilante Darkman after a brutal attack. It was praised by critics for its unique blend of Gothic horror and comic-book style, earning an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film was also a commercial success, turning its $14 million budget into a worldwide gross of $48.8 million. Despite spawning two less-successful TV movies, the original has maintained a dedicated cult following for over three decades.

Raimi’s Recent Projects

While fans await news on Darkman, Raimi has remained active in the industry. He recently returned to directing with the film Send Help and has produced several projects, including new entries in the Evil Dead franchise. Although he has expressed interest in potentially directing The Shadow someday, his current focus is on getting the long-awaited Darkman sequel into production.
