Colman Domingo Reveals Jerry Springer Inspiration for ‘The Running Man’ Villain
In a recent interview, Colman Domingo, who plays the villainous host Bobby T in the new film The Running Man, detailed the unconventional sources that shaped his performance. The Academy Award-nominated actor looked to the heyday of chaotic daytime talk shows to ground his character in a disturbing reality.

Speaking with GamesRadar+, Domingo explained that he studied hosts like Jerry Springer and Ricki Lake to understand the dynamics of public spectacle and humiliation. He identified Springer’s show, in particular, as a cultural turning point that normalized incivility for entertainment. “I really leaned into Jerry Springer because I thought that was interesting,” Domingo stated. “He was just bringing people on to fight, and saying, ‘Oh, well, I had nothing to do with it, I just asked the questions.’ People go to their id.”
A Timely Dystopian Reflection
The new adaptation of Stephen King’s novel presents a dystopian future where a deadly game show is broadcast to millions. Director Edgar Wright and co-star Lee Pace have both described the film’s commentary on societal complacency with violence as eerily timely. Pace, who plays the violent enforcer Evan McCone, noted that the film explores how audiences are made to feel like “the good guys” while consuming hostility directed at others, a theme that resonates with modern entertainment trends.
