Winston Chao

Winston Chao, born Chao Wen‑hsuan on 9 June 1960 in Taiwan, has become one of the most versatile and internationally recognised actors from the island. His early years were marked by a deep appreciation for classical Chinese theatre and a curiosity for Western cinema, which later guided his choice of roles that bridge cultural gaps. Chao first burst onto the global scene with Ang Lee’s seminal 1993 film The Wedding Banquet, where his nuanced performance as a supportive father earned critical praise and introduced him to audiences beyond East Asia. Over the following decades he built a reputation for portraying complex historical figures, most famously embodying Sun Yat‑sen in at least five productions, including The Soong Sisters (1997), Road to Dawn (2007) and 1911 (2011), each time offering a fresh perspective on the revolutionary’s personality and legacy. Aside from biographical portrayals, Chao demonstrated remarkable range in contemporary dramas such as Eat Drink Man Woman and Red Rose White Rose, where his ability to convey subtle emotional shifts earned him the Lily Award for Best Actor in 2006.
