During the reign of the Kangxi Emperor Winston Chao, Yaojia Chenxiang Zhou Dongyu enters the Forbidden Palace as a lowly servant, where she quickly learns the hard-won skills needed to survive among palace politics. She forges quiet alliances with two trusted figures, the loyal Liuli Zhao Liying and Chunshou Bao Bei’er, while also crossing paths with Yinxiang Lu Yi, a prince raised by Consort De, and forming a wary, almost enigmatic friendship with the Fourth Prince, known as Yinzhen. These relationships shape Chenxiang’s early years in a world where every gesture can be watched and every ally could become a rival.
Liuli betrays Chenxiang to become the di fu jin (official wife) of Yinxiang, a blow that pierces Chenxiang’s trust and heart. To protect Chunshou from Liuli’s cruelty, Chenxiang agrees to serve Liuli, enduring humiliation and watching from a distance as Yinxiang remains a beacon she can never openly reach. The tension deepens when Liuli’s secret is threatened to unravel, and Chenxiang is drawn into a fragile, dangerous game of loyalties. When Liuli’s bedchamber reveals an illicit affair with Yuntang, one of the princes, Liuli’s anger grows and the punishment Chenxiang endures becomes sharper.
Amid a tense hunt between the Emperor and the princes, Yinxiang is blinded, his visions lost and his place in the realm suddenly precarious. Chenxiang visits him every day, clinging to the routine that keeps her hope alive, even as Yinxiang mistakes her presence for Liuli’s. The Fourth Prince informs Yinxiang—though he does not yet know the truth—that Liuli has been involved with the Ninth Prince, a revelation that shatters the fragile trust between Chenxiang and Yinxiang and drives Chenxiang away from her beloved visitor.
Following Kangxi’s death, a fierce power struggle unfolds among the princes, with the Ninth Prince aiming for the throne. The Fourth Prince maneuvers skillfully and ultimately ascends as the Yongzheng Emperor, reshaping the line of succession. In a turn of fate, the Imperial Doctors are ordered to restore Yinxiang’s vision, allowing him to see again, though he remains unaware that his long-time visitor in the palace has been Chenxiang all along. Liuli, exposed by her indiscretions, attempts to escape the palace with money and a horse, but Yinxiang discovers the ruse and the plan collapses; Liuli is shot with arrows by order of the Emperor, ending her machinations.
The Yongzheng Emperor unlocks a reluctant awareness of the truth about Chenxiang, but he keeps it secret from Yinxiang for the time being, believing there is still work for Yinxiang to do within the palace walls. As Chenxiang comes of age—an age when a young woman can leave the palace, marked by turning 25—the Emperor offers her 100 gold taels as a generous farewell. Before Chenxiang departs, she visits the forgotten, abandoned portion of the palace where she first met Yinxiang, only to find him waiting there, a silent testament to the years they spent apart. Yinxiang finally realizes that the woman who visited him all along was Chenxiang, and he declares his love, promising that they will never be separated again and that he would leave the palace to be with her if needed.
If the couple cannot be together within the palace’s walls, they will choose a different path, but the story closes on a note of hopeful reunion, with Yinxiang and Chenxiang choosing happiness together. Their journey is one of perseverance, secrecy, and the quiet power of love that survives even the most rigid orders of duty and palace life.
