Walter Brooke

Walter Brooke, born Gustav William Tweer Jr. on October 23, 1914 in New York City, was a prolific American character actor whose career spanned over four decades of film, television, and stage. He began his screen work in the early 1940s with uncredited parts in wartime classics such as You're in the Army Now (1941) and quickly became a reliable supporting performer, often portraying military officers, lawyers, and authority figures. Brooke’s most iconic moment arrived in the cult classic The Graduate (1967), where he delivered the memorable line 'Plastics' as Mr. McGuire, the well‑meaning friend of Benjamin Braddock’s parents, cementing his place in American pop culture. Beyond the silver screen, Brooke cultivated a strong television presence, appearing as District Attorney Frank Scanlon on The Green Hornet and taking guest roles on series like The Waltons, Mannix, and The Incredible Hulk. His versatility allowed him to play everything from naval officers in McHale’s Navy to judges in legal dramas, demonstrating a chameleon‑like ability to adapt to varied genres. On Broadway he contributed to productions such as Hide and Seek (1957) and Seagulls Over Sorrento (1952), while also serving the acting community as a director for the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and an officer in Actors’ Equity. Throughout his life Brooke balanced a busy career with a stable family, marrying actress Elizabeth 'Betty' Wragge and raising two children, Thomas and Christina.
