His first film role arrived in 1960 when director Kihachi Okamoto cast him in Daigaku no sanzôkutachi, marking the start of a prolific presence on both the silver screen and television. By 1961, Yamazaki’s talent earned him the prestigious Elan d'or Award for Newcomer of the Year, signaling his emergence as a formidable talent in Japan’s post‑war cinema.
