What's After the Movie
Anna Mae Bullock, known worldwide as Tina Turner, was born on November 26, 1939 in Brownsville, Tennessee, the youngest of three sisters in a share‑cropping family. From humble beginnings, she sang in church choirs and earned nicknames like "Little Ann" before catching the attention of Ike Turner in 1956, whose band the Kings of Rhythm offered her a chance to sing live on stage. By 1960 she recorded "A Fool in Love," a breakthrough hit that introduced the stage persona Tina Turner and sparked a volatile yet prolific partnership with Ike, producing relentless touring schedules, chart‑topping singles such as "Proud Mary" and "Nutbush City Limits," and a reputation for electrifying live performance. After escaping an abusive marriage in 1976, she embarked on a gritty solo comeback, headlining clubs and television specials while battling financial debt. The release of Private Dancer in 1984 catapulted her back to global superstardom, delivering iconic tracks like "What's Love Got to Do with It," winning three Grammy Awards, and establishing her as the Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll. Her career spanned over six decades, encompassing landmark tours (Break Every Rule, Wildest Dreams, Twenty Four Seven), film roles in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and Last Action Hero, and a prolific catalog of albums that sold more than 100 million records worldwide. In 2013 she renounced U.S. citizenship, becoming a Swiss citizen and residing in Küsnacht, where she continued philanthropic work through the Beyond Foundation. A trailblazer for women and Black artists, Turner earned two Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductions, a Kennedy Center Honor, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and countless other accolades before passing away on May 24 2023 in Switzerland, leaving an indelible legacy of resilience, artistry, and unmatched stage energy.
