Beginning as a theatre performer, Mills honed his craft on the English stage before transitioning to the burgeoning film industry, where he joined the Vitagraph Company and quickly became a recognizable face in early motion pictures. His screen debut came in 1915 with The Making Over of Geoffrey Manning, and over the next two decades he appeared in a wide range of silent dramas and adventure films, including notable titles such as The Crown Prince's Double (1916), The Great Impersonation (1935), and It's Love I'm After (1937). As a director, Mills demonstrated versatility, helming adaptations like The Duplicity of Hargraves (1917) and A Night in New Arabia (1917), and collaborating on projects such as The Invisible Divorce (1920).
