Sverrir Gudnason

Sverrir Páll Guðnason, born on 12 September 1978 in Lund, Sweden, is a Swedish‑Icelandic actor known for his versatile performances across stage and screen. He was raised in Reykjavík after his Icelandic parents moved there, and his early exposure to theatre came through the Reykjavík City Theatre, where he debuted in Heimsljós. In 1990, his family returned to Sweden, settling in Tyresö when his father accepted a professorship at the Royal Institute of Technology, giving Sverrir a bicultural upbringing that would later inform his artistic sensibility. His first television appearance arrived the same year in the satirical New Year’s program Áramótaskaupið, marking the start of a career that would span more than two decades. By 1996 he was officially active as a professional actor, taking on roles in both Swedish and Icelandic productions. A breakthrough came with the Swedish‑Danish film Original, for which he earned the Best Actor award at the 2009 Shanghai International Film Festival, cementing his reputation internationally. He subsequently joined the acclaimed Wallander series, portraying Pontus Höijer in its second season, and became a fixture at Göteborgs and Stockholm city theatres. In 2017 he embodied tennis legend Björn Borg in the biopic Borg vs McEnroe, a performance praised for its physical and emotional depth. Following his turn as Borg, Guðnason continued to capture high‑profile roles, most notably as investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist in the 2018 adaptation The Girl in the Spider’s Web, demonstrating his capacity for gritty thriller material. In 2020 he appeared in Viggo Mortensen’s auteur film Falling, playing the younger version of Willis, a conservative father battling dementia, a part that showcased his dramatic nuance. Sverrir’s artistic lineage is notable as well: he is the son of the late Guðni A. Jóhannesson, former Secretary General of the Icelandic National Energy Regulatory, and Bryndís Sverrisdóttir, and his maternal grandfather was the prominent politician and banker Sverrir Hermannsson.
