What's After the Movie

Soma Saito

Soma Saito (斉藤 壮馬) was born on April 22, 1991 in the former town of Shōwa, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, where he grew up as the eldest of three children alongside two younger sisters. From a young age he was fascinated by storytelling, first dreaming of becoming a musician or novelist before a high‑school viewing of Akira Ishida’s performance as Koyemshi in Bokurano sparked his ambition to pursue voice acting. After excelling in the 2008 81 Produce audition—one of only thirty‑three finalists out of 1,035 applicants—he entered the agency’s ACTOR'S STUDIO while still attending high school. His talent earned him the Judges’ Special Prize at the 33rd National High School Comprehensive Cultural Festival in 2009, judged in part by veteran Nobuyo Ōyama, and he debuted in minor anime and game roles in 2010. While balancing his studies at Waseda University, Saito limited his professional workload until graduating in 2014, after which he landed leading parts such as Tasuku Ryuenji in Future Card Buddyfight, Tadashi Yamaguchi in Haikyu!!, and the enigmatic Twelve in Terror in Resonance.

These breakthrough performances culminated in winning the Best Male Newcomer at the 9th Seiyu Awards in 2015, sharing the honor with Ryōta Ōsaka and Natsuki Hanae. Expanding his artistic range, Saito launched a solo music career under Sacra Music in 2017, releasing singles like “Fish Story” and the album quantum stranger in 2018, for which he wrote all lyrics and compositions. His involvement with the multimedia project Hypnosis Mic earned a singing award at the 13th Voice Actor Awards in 2019. In June 2023, he announced his marriage to a non‑industry partner, adding a personal milestone to an already distinguished career that continues to flourish across voice acting and J‑pop music.
