Sharon Delores Clarke MBE, born on August 12, 1966, is an English actress and singer widely recognized for her significant contributions in both television and stage performances. Her fame rose with her role as Lola Griffin in the medical drama Holby City, and as Grace O'Brien in the renowned series Doctor Who. Clarke's stage career is also noteworthy as she played key roles in numerous West End musicals. She debuted the roles of the Killer Queen in We Will Rock You and Oda Mae Brown in Ghost the Musical. Being a three-time Olivier Award winner, Clarke has been lauded for her vibrant and impactful performances. She secured her first Olivier in 2014 for her role in James Baldwin's The Amen Corner. Later in 2018, her performance in Caroline or Change led to her second Olivier win, a role she reprised on Broadway earning her Grammy and Tony nominations. Her third Olivier Award was earned for her role in a revival of Death of a Salesman in 2020. Clarke's vibrant career on television includes roles in BBC's medical drama Holby City, CBBC's The Crust, EastEnders, and Doctor Who. She further diversified her skills with voice acting, lending her voice in shows like CBeebies' Tree Fu Tom and Numberblocks. Clarke's theatre career also includes her role in Southside, O Babylon! The Musical and West End theatre productions like Rent, Fame, and The Lion King. She also gained praise for her role as Ma Rainey in the revival of August Wilson's Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom in 2016. Besides acting, Clarke's musical endeavors include successful partnerships with the FPI Project and Nomad, scoring chart hits, and being a part of the female vocal group Six Chix.
