Sabu

Sabu Dastagir (born 17 January 1924 in Mysore, then part of the Kingdom of Mysore in British India) was an Indian‑American actor whose remarkable screen presence helped bridge Eastern and Western cinema during the golden age of Hollywood. Discovered by British filmmaker Alexander Korda while playing a street child in Calcutta, Sabu was cast in the 1938 epic The Thief of Bagdad, where his agile performance as the resourceful thief earned him international acclaim and made him the first Indian actor to achieve stardom in Western films. His natural charisma and athletic ability led to further iconic roles such as the title character in The Elephant Boy (1937), the adventurous prince in The Adventures of Tintin, and the mischievous Mowgli in The Jungle Book (1942). Throughout the 1940s and 1950s Sabu appeared in a variety of adventure and fantasy pictures, including The Drum, The Jungle Book, and The Planter's Wife, often embodying exotic protagonists that challenged contemporary stereotypes while also typecasting him in narrowly defined roles. After gaining British citizenship during his early career, Sabu became a naturalized United States citizen in the early 1950s, reflecting his trans‑continental personal and professional journey. Despite his early fame, he struggled to secure leading‑role opportunities as Hollywood shifted toward new genres, and he eventually turned to supporting parts and television appearances, such as his guest spot on The Twilight Zone. Sabu married twice, though details of his spouses remain private, and he fathered no publicly recorded children. He died unexpectedly of a heart attack on 2 December 1963 in London, at the age of 39, cutting short a career that had already left an indelible mark on both British and American cinema. Critics credit Sabu with paving the way for later actors of South Asian descent, and his performances continue to be celebrated for their vitality, authenticity, and the groundbreaking representation they offered to audiences worldwide.
