Roger Daltrey

What's After the Movie

Roger Daltrey

Roger Harry Daltrey was born on 1 March 1944 in East Acton, London, England, during a wartime bombing raid, the eldest of three children to Harry and Irene Daltrey. From an early age he exhibited a fierce determination, excelling in the eleven‑plus exam before attending Acton County Grammar School, where he later formed the skiffle group the Detours and built his first guitar from plywood. In 1959 he joined the Detours as lead guitarist, quickly assuming a dominant leadership role that would later translate into his iconic front‑man presence with The Who. Daltrey’s powerful, gritty voice and theatrical stage antics—most famously swinging his microphone by its cord—propelled the band to global stardom, delivering anthems such as “My Generation”, “Pinball Wizard”, “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, “Baba O’Riley”, and “Who Are You”. While the group dominated the rock landscape, Daltrey launched a solo career in 1973, releasing ten studio albums that showcased his versatility across rock, pop, and blues, producing hits like “Giving It All Away”, “Free Me”, and “Under a Raging Moon”. Beyond music, he pursued acting, starring in Ken Russell’s film version of Tommy (1975) and earning a Golden Globe nomination, and he contributed as a film producer on projects such as McVicar. His commitment to charity is evident in the founding of the Teenage Cancer Trust concerts, raising over £20 million, and his support for numerous youth and health initiatives. Daltrey has been married twice—first to Jaquelin Rickman (1964‑1968) and then to Heather Taylor (1971‑present)—and is the father of eight children, including three with Taylor and several adopted offspring, and a proud grandfather of fifteen. Recognized with a knighthood in 2025 for services to music and charity, Daltrey remains an enduring figure in rock history, celebrated for his vocal power, charismatic leadership, and lifelong dedication to artistic and humanitarian causes.
