What's After the Movie
Robin Hugh Gibb was born on 22 December 1949 at the Jane Crookall Maternity Home in Douglas, Isle of Man, the son of Hugh and Barbara Gibb. After a brief childhood in Manchester, his family emigrated to Redcliffe, near Brisbane, where the brothers formed the early Rattlesnakes, a precursor to the Bee Gees. The group returned to England in the mid‑1960s, achieving their first chart success with “New York Mining Disaster 1941” and quickly becoming one of the most influential pop‑rock acts of the era, selling over 200 million records worldwide. Robin’s distinctive vibrato‑laden vocal style earned him praise as one of the best white soul voices and he contributed lead vocals on classics such as “I Started a Joke”, “Massachusetts”, and “I Hear That Music” while also playing keyboards, piano, organ and Mellotron on early Bee Gees recordings. In 1969 he left the group to launch a solo career, scoring a UK‑number‑two hit with “Saved by the Bell” and releasing the album Robin’s Reign in 1970, though his solo efforts never matched the commercial impact of the Bee Gees. He rejoined his brothers in 1970, participating in the legendary disco era that produced Saturday Night Fever sound‑tracks, where his falsetto blended seamlessly with Barry’s to create hits like “Stayin’ Alive” and “How Deep Is Your Love”. Beyond recording, Robin co‑wrote for artists such as Barbra Streisand, Jimmy Ruffin and the Marbles, and he was a prolific collaborator on charity singles and TV soundtracks throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He received numerous honors, including a CBE in 2002, induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (1997) and the Songwriters Hall of Fame (1994). His later years were marked by health struggles, including colorectal cancer, and he made his final public appearance at the London Palladium in February 2012 supporting injured servicemen. Robin Gibb died on 20 May 2012 in London, leaving a legacy as a pioneering vocalist, songwriter and cultural ambassador whose music continues to resonate across generations.
