What's After the Movie
Rich Sommer (born February 2, 1978) is an American actor best known for his nuanced performance as Harry Crane on the acclaimed AMC drama Mad Men (2007‑2015), a role that earned him two Screen Actors Guild Awards alongside the ensemble cast. Born in Toledo, Ohio and raised in Stillwater, Minnesota, Sommer discovered his love for performance early, singing in the Concordia Choir while majoring in theater at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. He honed his improvisational skills at the Brave New Workshop in Minneapolis and even founded an improv troupe called the Slush Puppies before pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in acting at Case Western Reserve University, which he completed in 2004. After graduating, Sommer returned to his alma mater to teach icebreakers to law students in 2006 and led an improv workshop for undergraduates in 2008, demonstrating his commitment to mentorship. His film debut came with a memorable supporting turn as Doug, a friend of Anne Hathaway’s character, in the 2006 comedy The Devil Wears Prada, and he soon appeared in a series of high‑profile commercials for brands such as Bud Light and Sprint. Beyond Mad Men, Sommer’s television résumé includes guest spots on The Office, Ugly Betty, Nikita, and a recurring role as Detective Dean Riley on The CW’s In the Dark (2019). On stage he originated the role of Harry in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s Broadway revival of Harvey alongside Jim Parsons, and he tackled Sam Shepard’s Buried Child Off‑Broadway in 2016. A passionate gamer, he voiced Henry in the award‑winning video game Firewatch (2016) and hosts the tabletop‑gaming podcast CARDBOARD!. He resides in Los Angeles with his wife, Virginia Donohoe, whom he married in 2005, and the couple share two children.
