In 1975, a 19-year-old aspiring writer named Anthony “Tony” Bourdain finds himself enrolled at Vassar College. Driven by his passion for writing, he applies for a significant writing fellowship that would allow him to experience life in New York City. However, he misleads his family and his high school sweetheart, Nancy Putkoski, into believing that he has already secured this fellowship. When the reality hits him that he wasn’t awarded the fellowship, he impulsively decides to head to Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he knows Nancy plans to spend her summer.

Upon arriving in Provincetown, Tony discovers that Nancy is now dating a local pizza delivery driver. In a bid to dull his disappointment, he visits The Flagship, a bustling seafood restaurant, where he ends up drinking heavily. His inebriation leads him to be rude to Mary, a waitress and bartender at the restaurant, ultimately resulting in his ejection and robbery by Sal, one of the cooks at The Flagship.

Short on cash and needing a way back home, Tony considers sneaking onto the ferry but is caught by Nancy, who becomes intrigued by his insistence that he’s in Provincetown for research related to his fellowship. She invites him to a party, encouraging him to stay longer. Seizing the opportunity, Tony returns to The Flagship to beg Chef for a job, falsely claiming to have prior restaurant experience. He starts working as a dishwasher and quickly becomes engulfed in the chaotic, drug-fueled environment of the restaurant, notably developing a connection with the unpredictable and brash Sal.

As Tony begins to adapt to his new life, Sal’s struggles with heroin lead to a dramatic altercation with Chef, resulting in Sal’s departure. Taking advantage of the situation, Tony is promoted to a cook, gaining mentorship from Chef, while also growing closer to Nancy, despite maintaining his web of lies regarding the fellowship.

In a bid to impress Nancy, Tony invites her to The Flagship and persuades Chef to feature lobster thermidor as a special dish. The initial success of the dish quickly takes a turn for the worse when a grease fire erupts in the kitchen, and in his panic, Tony exacerbates the situation by attempting to extinguish it with water, resulting in extensive damage to the restaurant. Chef, heartbroken over the loss of his establishment and furious at Tony’s deceit about his experience, fires him. Afterward, Tony confesses to Nancy that he followed her to Provincetown, which leads to her outrage and disappointment.

Desperate to earn money for his return home, Tony reconnects with Sal. Their plans to raise funds include a clambake on the beach, which Tony initially considers for personal gain. Yet, when he sees the support from his colleagues, Nancy, and Chef, he begins to realize the significance of community and the friendships he has formed. In a moment of redemption, he reconciles with both Nancy and Chef, who, inspired by Tony’s newfound awareness, helps him apply to the Culinary Institute of America with a heartfelt recommendation letter.

Following Chef’s guidance, Tony adopts the name “Anthony” and prepares to embark on a promising thirty-year culinary career, which begins with lessons learned and friendships rebuilt in the vibrant heart of Provincetown.
