What's After the Movie
Paul Verhoeven is a Dutch filmmaker born on 18 July 1938 in Amsterdam, whose career spans more than six decades and crosses three continents. He began his cinematic journey while still a student at Leiden University, producing a series of short experimental films such as “Één hagedis teveel” (1960) and “The Hitchhikers” (1962) before moving into television with the popular series Floris (1969). His breakthrough came with the 1973 Dutch feature Turkish Delight, a passionate, controversial romance that earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign‑Language Film and established his reputation for combining visceral sexuality with sharp social commentary. Throughout the 1970s he continued to explore Dutch history and identity with works like Soldier of Orange (1977) and the adolescent drama Spetters (1980), each marked by vivid realism and a willingness to portray graphic violence. In 1985 Verhoeven crossed to Hollywood, directing the gritty medieval epic Flesh and Blood before achieving global fame with the cyber‑punk satire RoboCop (1987) and the mind‑bending sci‑fi thriller Total Recall (1990), both earning Academy Special Achievement Awards for technical innovation. The early 1990s saw his most polarising effort, the erotic thriller Basic Instinct (1992), followed by the notorious but now cult‑classic Showgirls (1995). Returning to Europe in the 2000s, he delivered the critically acclaimed war drama Black Book (2006) and the French psychological thriller Elle (2016), the latter winning a Golden Globe and cementing his status as a versatile auteur. Even now, in his eighties, Verhoeven remains active, developing new projects such as the political thriller Young Sinner, proving that his provocative vision and technical mastery continue to influence contemporary cinema.
