Paul Rhys

Paul Rhys is a Welsh actor born on 19 December 1963 in Neath, Wales, United Kingdom, to working‑class Catholic parents, Kathryn Ivory and Richard Charles Rhys. From a young age he demonstrated a remarkable variety of talents, breeding and training horses from the age of ten and later immersing himself in the punk music scene, singing in several bands. His first professional acting role came in John Godber’s hit play Bouncers, playing the Liverpudlian judo expert Ralph, which earned him an Equity card after he performed jazz standards at Peter Boizot’s Pizza Express in London. A scholarship to RADA allowed Rhys to study under the guidance of Bernard Shaw, where he won both the William Pole prize and the Bancroft Gold Medal, and his early stage work included a notable performance as Gerald in Oscar Wilde’s A Woman of No Importance at the Glasgow Citizens Theatre. Throughout his career he has worked across film, television, radio and theatre, earning acclaim for roles ranging from the historical figure Theo van Gogh in Robert Altman’s Vincent & Theo to Sydney Chaplin opposite Robert Downey Jr. in Richard Attenborough’s Chaplin. His television résumé includes leading parts in The Assets, Turn: Washington’s Spies, and a recurring vampire role in A Discovery of Witches, while his stage achievements feature award‑winning performances such as Angelo in Simon McBurney’s Measure for Measure and the title role in Hamlet at the Young Vic. In recent years Rhys has continued to appear in high‑profile projects, portraying Talleyrand in Ridley Scott’s 2023 epic Napoleon and Duncan in Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn.

Beyond his professional life, Rhys has faced significant personal challenges, including caring for his partner Arkie Whiteley during her battle with terminal cancer, an experience that deeply affected him. Despite health setbacks that once forced him to leave a production of Howard Brenton’s Paul after a dramatic weight loss, he has persisted in his craft, completing over one hundred BBC Radio dramas and receiving critical recognition such as a Critics’ Circle Theatre Award and an Olivier nomination.
