Nina Mae McKinney

Nina Mae McKinney (born Nannie Mayme McKinney on 1912-06-12 in Lancaster, South Carolina) was an American actress and singer whose career spanned four decades, making her one of the earliest African‑American film stars in Hollywood and a pioneering presence on European stages and television. Dubbed "The Black Garbo" by European audiences for her striking beauty and magnetic screen presence, she broke barriers with her lead role in King Vidor’s groundbreaking 1929 all‑Black feature Hallelujah! and later became one of the first Black performers to appear on British television. After a turbulent childhood marked by family instability and relocation from the South to New York, she entered show business as a chorus girl in Lew Leslie’s Blackbirds revue, quickly attracting Vidor’s attention with her dazzling performances. In 1929 she signed a five‑year contract with MGM, becoming the first African‑American performer to secure such a deal, and she starred in several Hollywood productions including The Bugle Sounds and Manhattan Serenade. Frustrated by the limited roles available to Black actors in the United States, McKinney embarked on a European tour in the early 1930s, where she enjoyed immense popularity, performed in cabarets from Nice to Budapest, and acted in British films such as Kentucky Minstrels and Sanders of the River. Despite facing racist criticism and legal battles over libel accusations, she persisted, using her international fame to highlight the talents of Black performers. Returning to the United States in the late 1930s, she continued working in race films and occasional mainstream pictures, while also appearing on stage and later on television. Her later years were spent in New York City, where she died of a heart attack on 1967-05-03 at age 54; her legacy endures as a trailblazer who opened doors for future generations of Black actors and singers.
