Neill Blomkamp

Neill Blomkamp, born 17 September 1979, is a renowned South African and Canadian film director and screenwriter. He first rose to prominence as the co-writer and director of the critically acclaimed science fiction action film District 9 in 2009. This film garnered him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. He went on to direct other well-received films such as the dystopian science fiction action film Elysium in 2013, and the sports drama film Gran Turismo in 2023. Displaying a unique style, Blomkamp often employs a documentary-style, hand-held, cinéma vérité technique, seamlessly blending naturalistic and photo-realistic computer-generated visual effects. He expertly deals with themes of xenophobia and social segregation in his films. Blomkamp is also recognized for his work with actor Sharlto Copley. This director's influence has not gone unnoticed, with Time naming Blomkamp as one of the 100 Most Influential People of 2009 and Forbes listing him as the 21st most powerful celebrity from Africa in 2011. His journey to critical acclaim began in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he was born. At the young age of 16, Blomkamp's passion and talent for 3D animation and design were ignited upon meeting Sharlto Copley, and he began this journey by creating 3D work for Copley's production company.
