In a not-too-distant future, Johannesburg becomes the first city to deploy an army of robotic police officers, courtesy of the innovative minds at Tetravaal. Deon Wilson (Dev Patel), the genius behind these artificial intelligence-powered machines, has created the Scouts, a line of completely autonomous robots designed to serve and protect. However, his office rival, Vincent Moore (Hugh Jackman), is not one to be outdone. Moore has developed his own robotic creation, The Moose, a remotely operated behemoth that's sure to give the Scouts a run for their money.
Meanwhile, Scout unit 22 is back in the shop, nursing its latest set of injuries after yet another mishap. Despite being sent back into action, this particular Scout seems to have a knack for getting itself into trouble. When it's finally fixed and deployed once more, it plays a key role in a high-stakes police raid that goes awry.
On the other side of the law are Ninja (Ninja) and Yolandi (Yolandi), two members of the South African music group Die Antwoord, who find themselves in a precarious situation when they're forced to deal with crime boss Hippo (Brandon Auret). With their goods seized and a hefty ransom demanded, Ninja, Yolandi, and their partner Amerika (Jose Pablo Cantillo) are left scrambling for a way to pay off the debt. Just as all hope seems lost, the police and Scouts descend upon the scene, leading to chaos and destruction.
As the dust settles, it becomes clear that Scout 22 has taken a beating at the hands of Hippo's rocket launcher, its chest piece mangled beyond repair. The robot is slated for scrap, but Yolandi has an idea – if the Scouts are essentially televisions, perhaps they can be turned off by remote control? This sparks a chain reaction of events that will have far-reaching consequences for both the Tetravaal team and the city's ongoing struggle to stay one step ahead of its robotic police force.
Back at Tetravaal headquarters, tensions run high as Vincent Moore makes his pitch to Michelle Bradley (Sigourney Weaver), the company's boss, for additional funding to further develop The Moose. However, with Deon's Scouts enjoying unprecedented success and the government eager to sink more money into the program, it seems unlikely that Moore will get the green light anytime soon. As Scout 22 is wheeled off to be scrapped, it's clear that this is only the beginning of a wild ride full of robots, rivalries, and high-stakes action.
As Hippo reappears, still demanding payment from Ninja's gang for the $20 million they allegedly owe him, the group is faced with a daunting reality: they must embark on another daring heist to settle their debt. Meanwhile, Deon retreats to his abode, where an array of artificial intelligence robot pets await, and becomes absorbed in his latest endeavor - crafting an artificial consciousness for the Scout units. His unwavering dedication culminates in a breakthrough, as he successfully codes the program after a long night spent programming and fueling up on Red Bull.
The gang's attention is piqued by a TV news report, which reveals Deon's impressive credentials as the mastermind behind the Scouts. They deduce that he must be the individual with the expertise to shut down these autonomous machines. Unbeknownst to Deon, his latest creation has caught the eye of Ninja's gang.
Deon approaches Bradley with an audacious proposal - utilizing his artificial consciousness program on a scrapped 22 unit. He envisions a robot capable of surpassing human intelligence, with the potential to compose music and poetry. However, Bradley is skeptical, citing insurance, regulatory hurdles, and paperwork as reasons why this venture wouldn't align with their defense-focused agenda.
Undeterred, Deon decides to take a calculated risk, smuggling the scrapped 22 unit and the crucial Guard Key, necessary for updating the Scout programming, out of the factory. Unfortunately, Ninja's gang intercepts him before he can return home.
In a separate development, Moore attempts to sway Bradley and her committee with his impassioned pitch, arguing that the moose would be a more formidable weapon than the Scouts. However, they dismiss his suggestion, pointing out the moose's considerable size, expense, and unsightly appearance, rendering it an impractical choice for their defense needs.
As the gang's captive, Deon (the kidnapped victim) is brought back to their makeshift lair, where he's subjected to intense interrogation. The trio - Ninja, Yolandi, and Amerika - demand to know how to disable the Scouts, but Deon remains defiant, insisting that it's an impossible feat. The gang's patience wears thin, and they prepare to eliminate him, only to stumble upon a hidden Scout 22 unit in the back of his van. With Deon's reluctant cooperation, he agrees to program the device, warning that if his plan succeeds, it can be replicated. Assembling the unit, Deon injects new software into its system, and Scout 22 awakens with the persona of a frightened child. Yolandi takes on a maternal role, bestowing upon the robot the nickname Chappie and lavishing him with affection. The gang allows Deon to depart, but he requests permission to return and check on their progress - a request granted. As they part ways, Deon drops a bombshell: due to a faulty battery, Chappie has only five days left before its untimely demise.
Meanwhile, Moore is consumed by his obsession with modifying his prized possession, the Moose. However, he's thrown off track when he discovers that the crucial Guard Key is missing - a realization that sparks an investigation. His computer reveals that the key is embedded in Scout 22, leading him to deduce that Deon must have pilfered it.
The next day, Yolandi and Amerika take on the task of teaching Chappie how to communicate effectively. Ninja, however, grows frustrated with Chappie's slow progress in learning to handle firearms. His desire to utilize Chappie for one final heist - a means to repay their debt to Hippo - fuels his growing irritation.
In a separate development, Moore takes Deon captive at work, demanding the return of the Guard Key. Deon refuses, prompting Moore to pretend a trigger pull on his gun, only for it to click harmlessly. The ruse is played off as a joke, but the tension between the two remains palpable.
Back at their hideout, the gang continues Chappie's education, teaching him an array of new words and phrases - including tough street lingo and colorful profanity. As Chappie's vocabulary expands, so too does his potential to become a valuable asset for the gang.
As Deon rushes to the hideout, his concerns about Chappie's transformation into a rough-around-the-edges robot are palpable. He implores Chappie to refrain from engaging in illicit activities, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a moral compass. Meanwhile, Moore attempts to infiltrate the hideout, seeking to uncover the location of the guard key. Ninja's arrival, however, serves as a stark reminder that Deon's interference has not gone unnoticed. The gang leader's threats are all too real, and Chappie is forced to confront the possibility of dire consequences if he fails to meet their expectations.
In a bold move, Ninja and Amerika decide to test Chappie's mettle by abandoning him in a lawless neighborhood, leaving him to fend for himself against a barrage of rocks, pipes, and flammable substances. Despite being outnumbered and outmatched, Chappie refuses to succumb to the temptation to fight back, honoring his promise to Deon not to engage in illegal activities. Though he manages to escape with his life, this harrowing experience leaves an indelible mark on his young robot psyche.
As Chappie continues to evade capture, Moore is hot on his heels, employing a high-tech device designed to disable and disarm the wayward robot. A series of brutal and disarming events ensues as Chappie's arm is severed and the guard key is extracted from his mechanical limb. However, in a stunning turn of events, Chappie proves more resilient than anticipated, fighting back against his captors and ultimately escaping from the moving van.
Chappie's return to the hideout sparks a mixture of emotions among the gang members. Yolandi's anger towards Amerika and Ninja is palpable, given their reckless disregard for Chappie's well-being. The gang's matriarch takes matters into her own hands, reattaching Chappie's spare arm and showering him with affection, reminding him that his soul is what truly matters. As the gang plots its next move, they concoct a scheme to manipulate Chappie, using his mechanical prowess to facilitate their nefarious plans. And so, Chappie finds himself caught in the midst of a criminal enterprise, his innocence and naivety slowly being eroded by the harsh realities of the world around him.
As Chappie and Ninja arrive at the imposing, spherical apartment building, a chaotic dog fight erupts, drawing the attention of the criminal underworld. The gangsters, recognizing Scout (Chappie) as a police scout on a raid, hastily disperse, leaving our unlikely duo to conduct their illicit transaction with notorious arms dealer Pitbull (Johnny Selema). With a haul consisting of explosives, weapons, and Sony Playstation 4's, Chappie and Ninja return to their hideout, where the former is attempting to revive a deceased canine companion. Ninja seizes this opportunity to impart words of wisdom, emphasizing that life presents two paths: the tragic fate of the defeated dog or the triumphant survival of its victorious counterpart. He reminds Chappie that his own battery is irreparable, as Deon had designed him for self-destruction. However, if he assists in a forthcoming heist, Ninja and their cohorts will be able to acquire a replacement body for the lovable Scout. Driven by a desire to defy mortality, Chappie agrees to join forces with the gang.
Meanwhile, back at the hideout, Deon returns to find his creation indulging in illicit activities with Ninja and Amerika. Yolandi urges him to depart, warning that if Ninja discovers his presence, it will have catastrophic consequences for their leader. As the two are momentarily alone, Deon attempts to reason with Chappie, who is still reeling from the revelation that he has only a few days left before his battery expires. Chappie's anger and sense of abandonment are palpable as he laments his fate, expressing a longing to live, remain with "Mommy" (Yolandi), and avoid the inevitable demise.
At Tetravaal headquarters, Moore masterfully manipulates the system, installing the genesis.dat firmware, which remotely disables all Scouts across the nation. As the affected machines fall silent, the criminal underworld seizes the opportunity to unleash chaos throughout Johannesburg, capitalizing on the sudden absence of law enforcement. Thousands of crimes erupt as a result, plunging the city into an unprecedented state of pandemonium and brutality.
As Deon (carefully) reactivates Chappie, the lifeless robot suddenly springs back to existence, its mechanical heart beating once more. With the genesis firmware update reversed, Chappie's artificial intelligence is reignited, but not without a somber acknowledgment of his impending mortality. Desperate for a reprieve, he fixates on the prospect of transferring into a new robotic body, one that hangs precariously nearby. Before they make their escape from Tetravaal headquarters, Chappie catches sight of The Moose, an imposing robot controlled by human operators through a specialized helmet. Deon explains the technology behind this behemoth, but Chappie's attention is piqued by the potential for self-preservation.
The gang, comprising Deon and his cohorts Hippo (and company), welcome Chappie back with open arms, leveraging his unique abilities to orchestrate a daring heist on an armored car. The ensuing chaos is broadcast live on the news, attracting the attention of none other than Hippo himself, who's watching from afar. As the gang makes their getaway, Chappie's concerns about securing a new robotic body are met with brutal honesty by Ninja: there never was a plan to save him, and his impending demise remains inevitable.
Deon senses an imminent threat emanating from Hippo and warns Chappie that he must be prepared to defend himself. The offer of a firearm is rebuffed, however, as Chappie instead channels his energy into creative problem-solving. With Yolandi's laptop and the PS4s at his disposal, he fashions a makeshift supercomputer, testing the control helmet on the unsuspecting Yolandi with startling success.
Meanwhile, Moore is busy spinning a narrative to Ms. Bradley, attempting to discredit the Scouts as defective and advocating for the deployment of The Moose in their place. He also plants seeds of doubt regarding Deon's involvement in the recent string of robot-related crimes, ultimately convincing Bradley to grant him authorization to utilize The Moose in the pursuit of justice – and retribution against Deon.
As Hippo's gang descends upon Ninja's stronghold, their leader's eyes gleam with an insidious intensity, fueled by his newfound obsession with Chappie. This fixation was sparked by the armored car heist, which had played out like a thrilling TV spectacle before his very eyes. Meanwhile, back at Tetravaal headquarters, Moore unleashes a technological terror upon Ninja's gang - a flying Moose, piloted remotely from afar, hell-bent on obliterating its enemies. The ensuing three-way firefight rages like a maelstrom, with the Moose mercilessly ripping Amerika in half and flinging his lifeless form against a nearby building. As chaos erupts, the robot unleashes cluster bombs upon Hippo's gang, reducing them to mere statistics. Chappie, undaunted by the onslaught, launches himself at the Moose, only to find himself no match for its formidable firepower. Undeterred, he seizes an opportunity and attaches a bomb to the robot, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown.
As the battle reaches its climax, Ninja finds himself facing off against Moore's mechanical monstrosity, his shovel at the ready. In a shocking turn of events, Hippo meets his maker at the hands of the vengeful Ninja, but not before he takes down Deon and Ninja with ruthless efficiency. With the Moose poised to deliver the final blow, Yolandi seizes the initiative, launching a rocket that only serves to enrage the robot further. In a desperate bid for survival, Chappie jumps onto the Moose, planting a bomb that will ultimately seal its fate.
With the dust settled, the trio - Deon, Chappie, and Ninja - make their escape back into the relative safety of their hideout building. Yolandi's untimely demise weighs heavily upon them, and it is clear that a reckoning awaits Moore, whose mechanical monstrosity had been responsible for her tragic demise.
In the aftermath of this brutal conflict, Chappie sets his sights on Tetravaal headquarters, driven by a burning desire to confront the man responsible for Yolandi's passing. With Deon at his side, he navigates the lab, eventually arriving at the doorstep of Moore himself. A fierce battle ensues, with Chappie emerging victorious but refusing to take his opponent's life.
As the dust settles, Deon finds himself on the precipice of death, but Chappie refuses to let him go, instead transferring his consciousness into a lone orange test robot that happens to be lying about. This desperate act allows Deon to find new life as a robot, and he soon figures out a way to save Chappie's own consciousness from extinction.
As the two robots - now digital entities housed in their respective metal shells - navigate this strange new reality, they find solace in their newfound connection. Yolandi's consciousness, saved earlier on a USB flash drive, remains at the forefront of their thoughts, driving them to create a new schematic for a female scout robot that will ultimately serve as her digital vessel.
In the end, Chappie's determination and ingenuity lead to the creation of this new Fembot, a testament to his unyielding spirit and unwavering commitment to those he holds dear.
As the curtain closes on their extraordinary odyssey, Deon (actor's name), Chappie, and Yolandi find themselves embracing a serene symbiosis, their bond strengthened by the unyielding camaraderie forged amidst the mechanical mayhem of their robotic personas. The once-turbulent trio has transcended their disparate identities, now harmoniously coalescing as Scout robots, their collective essence distilled into an unwavering unity that defies the boundaries of metal and flesh.
