Michael Robbins

Michael Robbins (Michael Anthony Robbins, 14 November 1930 – 11 December 1992) was a prolific English actor whose career spanned over three decades, making a lasting impression on both television and film. Born in Croydon, Surrey, England to Percival W. Robbins and Bertha May Sindall, he attended St Michael’s College in Hitchin where his early exposure to amateur dramatics sparked a lifelong passion for performance. After a brief stint as a bank clerk, Robbins turned to acting full‑time in 1957, quickly becoming a familiar face on the British screen. He is best remembered for his iconic portrayal of Arthur Rudge, the sarcastic husband of Olive in the beloved sitcom On the Buses (1969‑1973) and its three cinematic spin‑offs, a role that showcased his talent for delivering dry wit and physical comedy. Beyond the bus depot, Robbins demonstrated remarkable versatility, appearing in a litany of popular series such as The Saint, The Sweeney, Doctor Who (the 1982 story “The Visitation”), The Good Life, One Foot in the Grave and EastEnders, where he played a councillor in 1989. His film résumé includes The Whisperers, The Great Muppet Caper, The Pink Panther Strikes Again and Victor/Victoria, reflecting his ability to shift seamlessly between comedic and straight‑acting parts. An accomplished radio performer, Robbins also contributed to the long‑running soap Waggoners’ Walk. Off‑screen, he was a dedicated philanthropist, serving the Grand Order of Water Rats (earning “Rat of the Year” in 1978) and the Catholic Stage Guild, and was honoured with the papal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal in 1987 for his charitable work. He married actress Hal Dyer in 1960, and the couple remained together until his death from prostate cancer at age 62 in Surrey. Robbins’ enduring legacy lives on through his memorable characters and his commitment to both his craft and his community.
