Martin James Pflieger Schienle, professionally known as Martin Starr, is an American actor with a standout career in both television and movie roles. Born on July 30, 1982, in Santa Monica, California, he first came to prominence with his performance as Bill Haverchuck in the comedy drama Freaks and Geeks (1999–2000). He later played the character Roman DeBeers on the comedy series Party Down (2009–2010, 2023) and Bertram Gilfoyle on the HBO series Silicon Valley (2014–2019). His filmography also includes roles in Knocked Up (2007) and Adventureland (2009), as well as a recurring role as Roger Harrington in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. In his personal life, Starr is a Buddhist and the son of actress Jean St. James. Despite early career struggles, he rediscovered his passion for acting after receiving an offer for Knocked Up.
Over his career, Starr has made numerous guest appearances in shows such as Ed, Mysterious Ways, Providence, King of the Hill, and Normal, Ohio. He has also contributed to the 2007 comedy film Knocked Up, which was a box office and critical success. The success of Knocked Up propelled him into larger roles in films like Good Dick and Adventureland. Starr frequently participates in prestigious film festivals like the Sundance Film Festival. Furthermore, he has reprised the role of Roger Harrington in several Spider-Man films. From 2009 to 2010, he portrayed Roman DeBeers on the Starz sitcom Party Down, before the series was cancelled. Despite the challenges, Starr continued to work in other television series, such as NTSF:SD:SUV:: and had a major role in the film A Good Old Fashioned Orgy. He also guest-starred in several sitcoms including Mad Love, Community, and Childrens Hospital, and played Bertram Gilfoyle in HBO's Silicon Valley.
