She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress from her role in the 1984 film Places in the Heart. Her repertoire includes diverse films like Slap Shot (1977), Between the Lines (1977), The Verdict (1982), Prefontaine (1997), and The Insider (1999). More notably, she had a leading role in the 1987 film House of Games, directed by her then-husband David Mamet. A multi-talented performer, she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in 1996 and is also a Grammy Award nominee.
