What's After the Movie
Liam Dunn (born November 12, 1916 in New Jersey, United States) was an American character actor whose career spanned nearly three decades, from the late 1940s until his untimely death in 1976. He began his professional life on the burgeoning television landscape of the 1950s, appearing in iconic series such as Bonanza, Room 222, Alias Smith and Jones, Mannix, and Gunsmoke, where he often played memorable supporting roles that showcased his talent for comic timing and physical comedy. Dunn’s breakout moment arrived in 1972 when he portrayed the stern judge and father of Barbra Streisand’s character in the far‑cultural hit What’s Up, Doc?, a performance that caught the eye of legendary filmmaker Mel Brooks. This encounter led to a fruitful collaboration with Brooks, resulting in memorable turns as Rev. Johnson in Blazing Saddles (1974), the kindly Mr. Hilltop in Young Frankenstein (1974), and the quirky newsvendor in Silent Movie (1976). In addition to his work with Brooks, Dunn became a reliable presence in several Walt Disney productions, including The World’s Greatest Athlete (1973), Charley and the Angel (1973), Herbie Rides Again (1974) and the posthumously released Gus (1976). His television résumé continued to expand with guest spots on All in the Family, Barney Miller, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rhoda, Sanford and Son, and McMillan & Wife, often portraying characters who endured slap‑stick misfortune. Dunn’s film credits also included roles in Catch‑22 (1970), Papillon (1973), Emperor of the North Pole (1973), and The Night That Panicked America (1975), demonstrating his versatility across genre and medium. On the set of Disney’s The Shaggy D.A. in early 1976, Dunn collapsed during a roller‑rink sequence; he was hospitalized and died of emphysema on April 11, 1976, in Granada Hills, California, at the age of 59. Though he never achieved leading‑man stardom, Liam Dunn left an indelible mark on American comedy through his distinctive character work and his ability to imbue even the smallest parts with humor and humanity.
