Jacques Demy

What's After the Movie

Jacques Demy

Jacques Demy (5 June 1931 – 27 October 1990) was a French film director, screenwriter, and lyricist whose work stands among the most distinctive of the French New Wave, sharing the era with legends like Jean‑Luc Godard and François Truffaut. Born in Pontchâteau, France, Demy grew up on the Atlantic coast, a setting that would later provide the luminous backdrop for such classics as The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort. After early collaborations with animator Paul Grimault and filmmaker Georges Rouquier, he launched his feature‑film career with Lola in 1961, introducing a recurring universe where characters drift across movies, music permeates dialogue, and fate‑driven romances blossom amid saturated colour palettes. The 1964 musical Les Parapluies de Cherbourg cemented his reputation, employing every line of dialogue sung by a Michel Legrand score, while its tragic love story and vivid visual style influenced generations of filmmakers; the film earned the Golden Palm at Cannes and remains a touchstone of cinematic musical storytelling. Demy continued to blend Hollywood spectacle with French poetic realism in Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (1967), Donkey Skin (1970), and the ambitious yet under‑appreciated Model Shop (1969), a stark, naturalistic portrait of Los Angeles that contrasted sharply with his earlier whimsical tone. Beyond his artistic achievements, Demy’s personal life was marked by his marriage to fellow New Wave auteur Agnès Varda in 1962, their shared child Mathieu, and his adoption of Varda’s daughter Rosalie, reflecting a family life as eclectic as his films. Openly bisexual, he navigated a complex identity in a period of social change, and in his later years he earned a private pilot’s licence. Demy died in 1990 at age 59; while initially reported as cancer, Varda later disclosed he succumbed to HIV/AIDS. He is interred at Montparnasse Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy of musical innovation, visual exuberance, and a cinematic universe where love, destiny, and the everyday intertwine.
