In addition to his film work, Yamagata transitioned to television, securing the lead role of Kohei Akiyama in the jidaigeki series Kenkaku Shōbai in 1973, further cementing his status as a beloved household name in Japan. His contributions to Japanese cinema were recognized with the Order of the Sacred Treasure, 4th class, Gold Rays with Rosette in 1988, underscoring his lasting cultural impact. Yamagata’s life was cut short when he succumbed to tuberculosis on 28 June 1996 at the age of 80, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire actors and audiences alike.
