What's After the Movie
Harry Jon Benjamin, better known as H. Jon Benjamin, is an American actor, comedian, writer, producer, and musician born on May 23 1966 in Worcester, Massachusetts to a Jewish family. His father Howard led an electric company while his mother Shirley, a former ballet dancer, taught dance, instilling a blend of discipline and creativity. After graduating from Worcester Academy in 1984, he earned a BA from Connecticut College in 1988, then launched his comedy career in Boston, initially forming a duo with Sam Seder and joining David Cross’s Cross Comedy troupe. For the first seven years he worked primarily in groups, later embracing experimental solo work that rejected conventional stand‑up norms. Benjamin’s live projects include the Midnight Pajama Jam with Jon Glaser and Todd Barry, and a collaboration on the album Invite Them Up with David Cross. His voice‑over career exploded with iconic roles such as Sterling Archer in Archer, Bob Belcher in Bob’s Burgers, and Coach McGuirk in Home Movies, showcasing his deadpan delivery and versatile vocal range across adult animation, children's programming, and video games. He also voiced the titular boy in the 2023 film Boy Kills World and its 2024 gaming spin‑off. Beyond animation, Benjamin appeared in cult favorites like Wet Hot American Summer and its subsequent series, and earned the 2014 Vulture TV Award for Male Comedy Performer. A self‑described amateur ornithologist, he has narrated commercials for Coke Zero, Arby’s, and Progressive Insurance, while publishing the comedic memoir Failure is an Option in 2018. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, set decorator Amy Beth Silver, and their son.
