Geneviève Page, born Geneviève Bonjean on 13 December 1927 in Paris, France, emerged from a culturally rich family where art and literature were everyday companions. Her father, Jacques Paul Bonjean, was a renowned collector of 17th‑century French art, while her mother, Germaine Lipman Bonjean, came from a Jewish lineage that founded the LIP company. From an early age she was surrounded by creative influences — the young Geneviève even recalled the future fashion icon Christian Dior playing piano duets with her mother in the family home. Encouraged by her parents, she entered the Conservatoire at twelve, dazzling audiences with a performance of Musset at the Théâtre National Populaire, and later pursued formal studies at the École du Louvre and the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers. Her cinematic debut arrived in 1951 with Pas de pitié pour les femmes, and she quickly secured a memorable role as Madame de Pompadour in Fanfan la Tulipe (1952) alongside Gérard Philipe and Gina Lollobrigida. Over the following decades she built a trans‑national portfolio, appearing in Italian, British, and American productions; notable collaborations include starring with Robert Mitchum and Ingrid Thulin in Foreign Intrigue (1956), sharing the screen with Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren in El Cid (1961), and delivering a haunting performance in Luis Buñuel’s Belle de Jour (1967) opposite Catherine Deneuve. In The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970), directed by Billy Wilder, she embodied a seductive widow whose allure manipulates the legendary detective. Beyond film, Page maintained a vibrant stage presence from 1943 to 1998, tackling classics such as Le Soulier de Satin and Twelfth Night. She married fellow actor Jean‑Claude Bujard in 1959, with whom she raised two children. Even after retiring from screen work in 2003, she remained an emblem of French elegance until her peaceful passing in Paris on 14 February 2025 at the age of 97.
