What's After the Movie
Dennis Miller is an American political commentator, stand‑up comedian, talk‑show host, writer, actor and former sportscaster, born on November 3, 1953 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He grew up in the suburb of Castle Shannon, the eldest of five children, and was raised by his mother after his parents separated. Miller attended Saint Anne School, Keystone Oaks High School and later earned a journalism degree from Point Park University, where he joined the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. After college he worked a series of odd jobs – from deli clerk to ice‑cream scooper – while honing his comedic voice in the recreation room of his university and at local Pittsburgh open‑mic nights. In 1979, inspired by a Robin Williams HBO special, he moved to New York City, where a Playboy humor contest placed him in the spotlight and a Laff‑Off victory secured his first talent‑agent exposure. Saturday Night Live discovered him in 1985; he became the iconic Weekend Update anchor, delivering sardonic news with his trademark giggle, “Good evening, and what can I tell ya?” and closing with “Guess what, folks? That's the news, and I… am… outta here!” His six‑year SNL run propelled him to a series of television ventures, including The Dennis Miller Show (1992), Dennis Miller Live on HBO (1994‑2002), a brief stint as a Monday Night Football commentator (2000‑2002), and a political talk show on CNBC (2004‑2005). From 2007 to 2015 he hosted a nationally syndicated three‑hour radio program for Westwood One, later transitioning to podcasts and a short‑lived RT America series before retiring from regular broadcasting in 2022. Throughout his career Miller has published multiple comedy albums, authored several bestselling books of rants, appeared in films such as Joe Dirt and The Net, and remained a polarizing yet influential voice in American pop‑culture, known for his dense references, sharp wit, and willingness to evolve politically.
