What's After the Movie
Crispin Freeman is an American voice actor, voice director, and screenwriter renowned for his deep, resonant performances in English‑language dubs of Japanese anime and video games. Born in Chicago, Illinois, United States, he grew up as the eldest of three children in a culturally diverse household; his father is Jewish and his sister Cassidy Freeman later pursued acting as well. Freeman graduated from the Latin School of Chicago in 1990, earned a Bachelor of Arts in theater with a computer‑science minor from Williams College, and completed an MFA in acting at Columbia University, laying a strong foundation for both stage and voice work. After years of theatrical work on Broadway, the American Repertory Theater, the Mark Taper Forum, and the Williamstown Theater Festival, he entered the voice‑over industry in 1997 when a friend encouraged him to audition for Central Park Media, eventually landing the iconic role of Zelgadis Graywords in Slayers. Over the next two decades he built a prolific catalog, voicing Kyon in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Togusa across the Ghost in the Shell franchise, Alucard in Hellsing, Kirei Kotomine in Fate/Zero and Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, and Itachi Uchiha in Naruto, among many others. His video‑game credits include Albedo in the Xenosaga series, Helios in God of War III and Ragnarök, Baldur in Too Human, and the Winter Soldier in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. In addition to acting, Freeman directs English dubs, writes screenplays, and shares his expertise through workshops, lectures, and his “Voice Acting Mastery” website, which offers podcasts and training resources for aspiring talent. Most recently, in February 2023, he guest‑voiced Lieutenant Nolan in Star Wars: The Bad Batch, demonstrating his continued relevance and versatility in the ever‑evolving world of voice performance.
