What's After the Movie
Cree Summer Francks (born July 7, 1969) is a American‑Canadian actress and singer whose career has spanned over four decades, making her one of the most prolific voice talents in animation. Born in Los Angeles, California, she spent much of her childhood moving between Saskatchewan and Toronto, absorbing a multicultural environment that later informed her versatile performances. The daughter of celebrated Canadian actors Don Francks and Lili “Red Eagle” Francks, and sister to actor‑musician Rainbow Sun Francks, she entered the entertainment world at age thirteen with an appearance on the Canadian children's program Mr. Dressup. Her breakthrough came when she was cast as Penny in the original Inspector Gadget series in 1983, a role she would revisit decades later in various homages. Throughout the 1990s she became a household name in live‑action television as Winifred “Freddie” Brooks on the groundbreaking sitcom A Different World, while simultaneously building an extensive résumé of voice‑over work that includes iconic characters such as Elmyra Duff in Tiny Toon Adventures, Susie Carmichael in Rugrats and its spin‑off All Grown Up!, Numbuh 5 in Codename: Kids Next Door, and Foxxy Love in Drawn Together. Her portrayal of Princess Kida in Disney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire is often cited as a personal favorite, and she has voiced characters in major video games like Diablo III, Final Fantasy X‑2, and Mass Effect. Beyond acting, Summer pursued music, releasing the album Street Faërie in 1999, and collaborating with artists such as Lenny Kravitz and Dweezil Zappa. She has contributed vocals to numerous animated series tracks, reinforcing her reputation as a multi‑talented performer. In recent years she returned to live‑action as librarian Rosalyn Inez on Abbott Elementary and continues to lend her distinctive voice to new projects, solidifying a legacy that bridges generations of audiences.
