What's After the Movie
Charles Millat (born Veljko Milojević on 23 December 1921 in the village of Novi Pavljani near Bjelovar, then part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes) was a versatile actor who built a transnational career bridging Yugoslav and French cinema. After emigrating to France in the post‑war years, he acquired French citizenship and quickly entered the French film industry, where his Slavic features and commanding presence made him a frequent choice for roles requiring authority or exotic backgrounds. His screen debut came in 1957 with the espionage comedy OSS 117 Is Not Dead, where he played the character Ralph, and over the next three and a half decades he accumulated more than eighty credits in both film and television. Notable appearances include the tense wartime drama The Train (1964) in which he portrayed Pesquet, the chilling World War II thriller The Night of the Generals (1967) as Wionczek, and the historical epic Waterloo (1970) where he embodied the Marquis de Grouchy, a role that highlighted his ability to convey aristocratic poise. In the 1970s he appeared alongside iconic stars in French Connection II (1975) as Miletto and later contributed a subtle performance to The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988). His final screen role was a small but memorable part as the Russian man in Priez pour nous (1994), closing a career that spanned from the late‑1950s to the mid‑1990s. Throughout his professional life Charles Millot remained a character actor rather than a leading man, often credited under the French‑adapted version of his name while still honoring his Yugoslav roots. He passed away in Paris on 6 October 2003 at the age of 81, leaving behind a rich filmography that continues to be studied by aficionados of European genre cinema.
