What's After the Movie
Caroline Dhavernas is a Canadian actress born on May 15, 1978 in Montreal, Quebec, to a family of established Québécois performers; her father Sébastien Dhavernas and mother Michèle Deslauriers both worked extensively in theatre and television, providing her with an early immersion in the performing arts. She began working in the industry at age eight, providing French dubbing for children’s programs such as Babar, and by twelve she had moved in front of the camera with a role in the French‑language film Comme un Voleur (1990). Over the next decade she built a diverse résumé that includes the magical fairy Lucy in The Magic Dragon Tales, a supporting turn in the adventure drama Black Beauty (1992), and the lead mermaid princess Summer Rose in Summer's Colors (1996). Her breakthrough in English‑language television arrived in 2004 when she portrayed the eccentric Jaye Tyler in the cult‑favorite Fox series Wonderfalls, a role she has described as "Touched by an Angel on acid" and for which she also performed the French voice‑over. Following the cancellation of that series, Dhavernas appeared in a series of Canadian and international projects, notably the science‑fiction film Passchendaele (2008), the psychological horror drama Hannibal as Dr. Alana Bloom (2013‑2015), and the medical black comedy Mary Kills People (2017‑2019), where she carried the titular role with a blend of dark wit and compassion. In addition to on‑screen work she has contributed voice work to Ubisoft’s video game Child of Light and, as of 2021, serves as the official announcer for Montreal’s Réseau express métropolitain, following in her mother’s footsteps. Her personal life includes a partnership with actor Maxime Le Flaguais beginning in 2016 and the birth of their daughter Françoise in September 2018. Throughout her career she has been praised for her versatility, linguistic fluency in both French and English, and her ability to inhabit both fantastical and grounded characters with equal depth.
