What's After the Movie
Bruce Boxleitner is an American actor and science‑fiction author whose career spans five decades of television, film, and interactive media. Born on May 12 1950 in Elgin, Illinois, he grew up in the Chicago suburbs, attending Prospect High School before studying drama at the Goodman School of Drama (now part of DePaul University). His early screen debut came in 1973 with a guest spot on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and he quickly became a familiar face on popular series such as Gunsmoke and The Six Million Dollar Man. By the late 1970s, Boxleitner secured leading roles in the western anthology How the West Was Won and the adventure series Bring ’Em Back Alive, demonstrating a versatility that would define his later work. The actor’s most iconic performance arrived in 1982 when he portrayed Alan Bradley and the titular computer program Tron in Disney’s groundbreaking sci‑fi film, a dual role that earned him a lasting cult following and later reprises in Tron: Legacy (2010), the animated series Tron: Uprising (2012), and multiple video game adaptations. He continued to shape the genre with his portrayal of Commander John Sheridan on the critically acclaimed series Babylon 5 (1994‑1998), a role that cemented his status as a staple of 1990s television. Beyond screen acting, Boxleitner authored the western‑infused novels Frontier Earth (1999) and Searcher (2001), and voiced characters in games such as Kingdom Hearts II and Spec Ops: The Line. His personal life includes three marriages—first to Kathryn Holcomb, then to Melissa Gilbert, and presently to publicist Verena King—and three children. An avid supporter of space exploration, he has served on the board of the National Space Society, reflecting a lifelong passion that mirrors the futuristic worlds he often inhabits.
