Beryl Wallace

Born as Beatrice Heischuber on September 29, 1912, in Brooklyn, New York, Beryl Wallace emerged from humble beginnings as the second of nine children born to working-class Jewish immigrants from Austria. She adopted her stage surname early in her career, which began when she was just a teenager after responding to a casting call advertisement for Earl Carroll's famous Broadway production Vanities in 1928. This landmark show, which was promoted as featuring the "most beautiful girls in the world," launched her into the spotlight and established her as a prominent figure in the theater world. Wallace would go on to appear in six similar productions that were notable for their risqué content, featuring scanty costumes and introducing full nudity to Broadway for the first time. Her professional relationship with producer Earl Carroll evolved into a deep personal partnership that would define both her career and personal life, ultimately leading them to Hollywood where she became the star attraction at his famous Earl Carroll Theatre.

Wallace's transition to film began in 1934 with an uncredited appearance in Murder at the Vanities, the Paramount Pictures adaptation of the Broadway play. Though she spent a decade appearing in approximately twenty-two films, often in small roles or supporting parts in "B" Westerns for Monogram and Republic Pictures alongside stars like Roy Rogers and Richard Dix, her primary professional focus remained the stage. The Earl Carroll Theatre became synonymous with her image, literally, as the venue featured a massive 20-foot neon facial portrait of Wallace that became one of Hollywood's most recognizable landmarks. During World War II, she expanded her entertainment reach through radio, hosting the NBC program Furlough Fun and singing on weekly shows while volunteering at the Hollywood Canteen. Tragically, on June 17, 1948, while flying from Los Angeles to New York, Wallace and Carroll perished together in the crash of United Airlines Flight 624 in Aristes, Pennsylvania, ending a brilliant career that spanned two decades of American entertainment history.
