Herbert Birchell 'Bert' Remsen was a prominent American actor and casting director known for his diverse roles in numerous films and TV series. Born in Glen Cove, New York, on Long Island, he made a significant name for himself in the world of entertainment. Remsen was known for his characteristic roles in many films directed by the celebrated Robert Altman, including 'Brewster McCloud' and 'McCabe & Mrs. Miller.' His remarkable film credits also included 'Fuzz,' 'Inside Moves,' 'Places in the Heart,' and more. Notably, his final film was 'The Sky is Falling,' which was released posthumously in 2000.

Following an injury on set, Remsen transitioned from acting to casting, marking a new phase of his career from 1966 to 1974. This included being a casting director for 31 different TV series or movies. He resumed acting in 1970 after director Altman convinced him to take a small role while working as a casting director on 'Brewster McCloud.' Remsen also had a significant contribution as a serviceman aboard the destroyer USS Laffey during World War II, enduring an attack by 22 Japanese kamikaze planes during the Battle of Okinawa. Despite his burns, he returned to duty and survived this ferocious battle.
