Bernhard Wicki

Bernhard Wicki (28 October 1919 – 5 January 2000) was an influential Austrian‑Swiss actor, film director and screenwriter whose career spanned over five decades, shaping the post‑war German‑language cinema. Born in St. Pölten, Austria, he pursued studies in art history, history and German literature in Breslau before moving to Berlin to attend the drama school of the Staatliches Schauspielhaus. His early life was marked by political turmoil; in 1939 his involvement with the Bündische Jugend led to his imprisonment in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, after which he fled to Vienna and eventually settled in Switzerland in 1944. After World War II he emerged as a versatile actor, appearing in films such as Die letzte Brücke (1953) and Es geschah am 20. Juli (1955), while also cultivating a reputation as a photographer. Wicki’s directorial debut came with the documentary Warum sind sie gegen uns? (1958), but it was the anti‑war masterpiece Die Brücke (1959) that catapulted him to international fame, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and four German Film Awards for Best Direction. His subsequent works—including the religious drama The Miracle of Father Malachia (1961), the adaptation The Visit (1964), and his contribution to the epic The Longest Day (1962)—demonstrated his ability to blend compelling narrative with humanist themes, earning him the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 1961 Berlin International Film Festival.
