What's After the Movie
Barbara Loden was an American actress and pioneering director whose career spanned the late 1950s to her untimely death in 1980. Born Barbara Ann Loden on July 8 1932 in Asheville, North Carolina, she grew up in the Appalachian mountains after her parents divorced, describing herself as a “hill‑billy’s daughter” raised by her grandparents. At sixteen she moved to New York City, finding work as a commercial model, pin‑up girl, and Copacabian nightclub dancer before enrolling in the Actors Studio, where she cultivated a lifelong commitment to method acting. Loden’s early break came as a sidekick on The Ernie Kovacs Show in the mid‑1950s, a role secured by her first husband Laurence Joachim, and she quickly transitioned to the New York stage with credits in Compulsion, The Highest Tree, and Night Circus. Her film work intensified after marrying director Elia Kazan in 1966; she appeared in Wild River (1960) and gained wider recognition as Warren Beatty’s sister in Splendor in the Grass (1961). The pinnacle of her acting acclaim arrived when she earned a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress for portraying Maggie in the 1964 Broadway production of After the Fall, a role that critics compared to a modern‑day Jean Harlow. Dissatisfied with the limitations of Hollywood, Loden wrote, directed, and starred in Wanda (1970), a stark, cinéma vérité portrait of a disenfranchised Pennsylvania coal‑miner’s wife. Shot on a shoestring budget of $115,000 with a skeletal crew, the film won the International Critics’ Prize at Venice and later entered the National Film Registry. Although Wanda never achieved commercial distribution, its raw improvisational style and feminist undertones have earned it a lasting reputation as a landmark of American independent cinema. Loden continued to direct short educational films, teach acting, and develop new scripts until a breast‑cancer diagnosis in 1978 curtailed her work; she died in New York City on September 5 1980 at the age of 48.
