Barbara Krafftówna

Barbara Krafftówna (5 December 1928 – 23 January 2022) was one of Poland’s most enduring film and stage actresses, whose career spanned over seven decades and left an indelible mark on post‑war Polish cinema. Born in Warsaw, she grew up amid the turbulent interwar period and witnessed the devastation of World II, experiences that later informed the depth and nuance of her performances. After the war, she enrolled at the National Higher School of Theatre in Warsaw, where she honed her craft under the guidance of leading directors, and made her professional debut in 1946, quickly gaining recognition for her striking presence and versatile talent. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Krafftówna became a staple of both the theatrical repertoire and the burgeoning Polish film industry, starring in celebrated productions such as Tonight a City Will Die (1961), How to Be Loved (1963), and the internationally acclaimed The Saragossa Manuscript (1965), where her performance contributed to the film’s cult status among cinephiles.
