After a peripatetic childhood that saw him sent to Austria and later New York, Mann entered the New York theatre scene in the 1920s, performing under the name Anton Bundsmann and directing productions for the Theatre Guild. He shifted to Hollywood in 1937, working as a talent scout for Selznick and as an assistant director for Preston Sturges, where he absorbed the mechanics of fast‑paced filmmaking. Mann’s directorial debut, Dr. Broadway (1942), led to a string of low‑budget noirs that showcased his talent for atmospheric lighting, most famously in collaboration with cinematographer John Alton on T‑Men (1947) and Raw Deal (1948). The late 1940s and early 1950s marked his breakthrough as a master of the Western, crafting psychologically complex anti‑heroes in films such as Winchester ’73 (1950), The Naked Spur (1953), and The Man from Laramie (1955), often starring James Stewart, whose performances were deepened by Mann’s insistence on moral ambiguity and rugged, location‑driven landscapes. His later epic ventures—including El Cid (1961) and The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964)—demonstrated his ability to handle grand historical spectacles while retaining his signature visual intensity.
