What's After the Movie
Alba Adèle August was born on 6 June 1993 in Copenhagen, Denmark to a highly artistic lineage; her father is the acclaimed Danish director Bille August and her mother the celebrated Swedish actress‑director Pernilla August. Raised primarily in Sweden after her parents' divorce in 1997, she grew up surrounded by film and theatre, sharing the craft with her older sister Asta Kamma August and half‑brothers Adam and Anders August, both screenwriters. She attended the National School of Performing Arts in Copenhagen, graduating in 2018, and spoke fluently in both Swedish and Danish, with a strong command of English, giving her a versatile linguistic foundation for international work. Her first on‑screen appearance came at the age of eight in her father’s poignant drama A Song for Martin (2001), marking the start of a career that would soon span film, television and music. After small roles in IRL (2013) and the Swedish crime series Sandhamn Murders (2013), August broke through with the Netflix original The Rain (2017–2020), earning a Robert Award nomination for her compelling performance as a survivor in a post‑apocalyptic world. The following year she portrayed a young Astrid Lindgren in the biographical film Becoming Astrid (2018), a role that drew critical praise for its nuance and depth. She continued to diversify, starring as the titular nanny in the true‑crime series The Nanny in Knutby (2021–2025), which secured her a Kristallen TV Award nomination in 2022. In parallel with her acting, August launched a music career: her debut single “We’re Not Gonna Make It” (2020) featured in The Rain's final season, and her first album I Still Hide (2021) entered the Swedish Apple Music top ten, highlighted by the single “Lights” performed at the 56th Guldbagge Awards. A contestant on the popular Swedish show Så mycket bättre (2024), she earned notable streaming numbers for her cover of Noice’s “You Only Live Once”. Since 2023 she has also appeared alongside her mother and sister in the crime drama series Blackwater and is slated to co‑lead the historical film Stockholm Bloodbath (2024). Outside of her professional life, she shares a partnership with music producer Pontus Winnberg, and the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, in 2024.
