Al Ritz

Al Ritz, born Albert Joachim on August 27, 1901, in Newark, New Jersey, was an influential American comedian, actor, and entertainer who rose to prominence as the eldest member of the legendary Ritz Brothers comedy trio. Standing as the patriarchal figure among his siblings, which included brothers George, Samuel (later known as Jimmy Ritz), and Harry, as well as sister Gertrude Soll, Al embarked upon his entertainment career shortly after completing his high school education. He initially pursued a solo career in the vibrant world of vaudeville before the trajectory of his professional life transformed dramatically when he joined forces with his brothers Jimmy and Harry to form the Ritz Brothers act, reportedly adopting the distinctive surname after spotting it emblazoned on the side of a passing laundry truck. With their brother George serving as their dedicated agent and manager, the trio quickly established themselves as a formidable presence in nightclubs and vaudeville circuits across the nation. They captivated audiences with their unique blend of precision dancing, linguistically complex tongue-twisting parodies of popular stories and songs, and meticulously choreographed slapstick comedy that became their trademark. The Ritz Brothers achieved significant cinematic success when they made their screen debut in the 1934 two-reel comedy Hotel Anchovy, a breakthrough that led to their signing with 20th Century Fox as a specialty act, paving the way for their transition to feature films. Their first feature film appearance came with Sing, Baby, Sing in 1936, followed by their first starring vehicle, Life Begins in College, in 1937, cementing their status as major comedy stars of the era. In his personal life, Al Ritz maintained a stable and committed marriage to Antoinette 'Annette' Calamari Ritz, with whom he shared his life until his untimely death. Notably, the couple had no children. Tragically, Al Ritz's prolific career spanning four decades came to an abrupt end on December 22, 1965, when he suffered a fatal heart attack while performing with his brothers at New Orleans' prestigious Roosevelt Hotel at the age of 64. He was subsequently laid to rest at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering figure in American comedy whose work influenced generations of performers in both stage and screen entertainment.
