Adele Mara

Adele Mara (born Adelaide Delgado; April 28, 1923 – May 7, 2010) was a versatile American actress, singer, and dancer whose career spanned three decades of classic Hollywood cinema and early television. Born in Highland Park, Michigan to Spanish immigrants Angel and Eloisa Delgado, she grew up alongside her brother Luis, who later pursued acting as well. Mara’s early exposure to performance came through dancing with bandleader Xavier Cugat’s troupe, an experience that honed her rhythmic talent and paved the way for her entry into the film industry. After signing a contract with Columbia Pictures under the name Adele St. Mara, she appeared in a variety of B‑movies and comedy shorts, quickly shortening her stage name to the more memorable Adele Mara. She gained notice in the Three Stooges short I Can Hardly Wait and shared the screen with Rita Hayworth in You Were Never Lovelier. When her Columbia contract ended, Mara flourished at Republic Pictures, becoming a staple of Westerns and adventure films. Notable titles include The Vampire’s Ghost, Wake of the Red Witch with John Wayne, Sands of Iwo Jima, and Don Siegel’s Count the Hours. Her on‑screen charm and dancing ability also led to memorable television appearances throughout the 1950s and 1960s, such as episodes of Maverick, Cheyenne, Bat Masterson, and an appearance on The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.
