DNxHR

A codec family designed for high-resolution post-production and preservation.


Definition

DNxHR (Digital Nonlinear Extensible High Resolution) is Avid Technology’s suite of intermediate codecs optimized for editing, visual effects and archiving of high-resolution content (4K and beyond). By offering multiple quality profiles and maintaining constant quality rather than constant bitrate, DNxHR ensures consistent visual fidelity across varied production requirements.

Evolution and Profiles

Building on the success of DNxHD for HD workflows, DNxHR was introduced in 2014 to address the demands of UHD, 2K and 4K pipelines. It provides four main profiles:

  • DNxHR LB (Low Bandwidth): Proxy editing at ~45 Mbps for 4K24.
  • DNxHR SQ (Standard Quality): Efficient editing at ~100 Mbps.
  • DNxHR HQ (High Quality): Broadcast-grade quality at ~220 Mbps.
  • DNxHR HQX: 12-bit color depth for high-dynamic-range and color-critical work.
  • DNxHR444: 4:4:4 chroma subsampling and alpha channel support for visual effects.

This extensibility enables selection of the optimal trade-off between storage footprint and image quality.

Technical Features

  • Intra-Frame Compression: Each frame compressed independently for precise scrubbing and editing.
  • 10- or 12-Bit: Bit-depth choices support deep color grading and HDR mastering.
  • Cross-Platform: Native support in Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and many camera recorders.

Applications and Workflows

On-set, DNxHR LB proxies accelerate offline editing on laptop machines. In post-production, HQX and 444 variants serve as mezzanine masters for color grading and FX. Archives leverage DNxHR444 to preserve fine chroma detail and alpha channels for future repurposing. Integration with Avid’s Project and Media Management ecosystem simplifies collaboration and media relinking across distributed teams.

DNxHR has become a cornerstone of UHD and HDR production pipelines, offering an open alternative to proprietary camera formats and ensuring long-term accessibility.
